Day 47 Mon 31st May

19 miles from Melrose to Innerleithen

After breakfast in a cafe and buying loads of food for the journey I set off from Melrose by going South West (not ideal when you're heading for John O'Groats). All day I followed the course of the River Tweed, either by footpaths or by quiet country lanes. I saw lots of wild raspberry canes and lots of wild strawberries.

I continue to be surrounded by white hawthorn (May) blossom. As this has been coming into blossom all the way from Cornwall a friend has suggested that I should call my walk the White Wave Walk. Here it is with the River Tweed in the background.

I enjoyed walking next to the river and we had a lovely picnic here on the bank.

However although the sun shone all day and the views were always interesting the day was spoilt for me by the pain my ankle was giving me. At times it was excruciating and I was hobbling along at 2mph using both poles as walking sticks. I aim to get to Peebles tomorrow (11 miles) and have a rest day and/or see a doctor.
At Innerleithen we are camped near to the Tweed and Gyp has found another tennis ball - her fifth since we set off!

  1. Glad Gyp didn't find any 'tennis balls' to retrieve when you went past the military area! So glad the blog is back.Take care of that ankle and don't worry about the world cup.....just buy a kilt and paint your face blue..Sure you'll be fine !

  2. HI Pete,

Good to read your latest instalments, complete with excellent photos of Gyp doing her thing. Isn't it time you let her use the camera to take some photos of you?

Really hope that a rest day and possibly medical advice helps to sort out your ankle.

Very best wishes for the onward journey,

    Judy
