Followed Pennine Way up and over Laddow Rocks. This is the view looking back to Crowden, with Bleaklow in the near background and Kinder Scout behind.

Wainwright described Black Hill as ".. Shows desolate and hopeless quagmire to the sky.... Nothing can grow in this acid waste". 30 years on things have changed dramatically thanks to hundreds of stone slabs.

It's now a case of Follow the Yellow Brick Road right to the A635 crossing.
From there the PW, still mainly slabbed, winds through half a dozen reservoirs to Standedge. Interestingly, this paved path (which is the route shown on the OS maps) is given as The Wessenden Alternative to the Main Route by Wainwright.
At Wessenden I met up with Zoe, my daughter Rachel and her boyfriend Dave. We had Sunday lunch in The Carriage and I later pitched my tent on a small site behind the pub. £5

ReplyDeleteWhip is another name for Gyp!!! (nothing for anyone to worry about). Gyp is known as Gyp, Gyps, Gyppy, Whip, Whippy or Gypolina. (I know but they all just sort of happened)
