Day 42 Wed 26th May

20 miles from Westgate to Hexham
(Weardale to Tynedale)
This is the last day of my creation The Dale Hop Walk.
Retrospective view of Westgate.

I left Westgate by a quiet country lane that went due North to Linzgarth and then on to Blanchland. There were two long hauls up and down but the scenery was stunning and we did ten miles in just over three hours. I also got a really good view of a male ring ouzel near one of the burns that run off from the ridge of Redburn Common.
Had a steak sandwich in a posh hotel in Blanchland and then headed North up a green lane over Blanchland Moor and through Slaley Forest. I looked for red squirrels without success.

Quiet country lanes and a few paths took me through Steal, Juniper and Dipton Mill to a steep climb up a busy narrow road into Hexham.
It started drizzling just before Blanchland and never really stopped. It is now 7pm, lashing down outside and I'm wondering if I'm going to eat tonight. Don't worry about Gyp - I carry her food and she always gets fed!

  1. Hi again Pete, good to see you back near enough to civilisation to get a signal. Missed your blogs over the last few days.I loved your comments around Westgate and Eastgate areas as I used to deliver a lot in those parts at one time. Always found the inhabitants very friendly. I was never allowed to work till I had a meal with the family.Happy days! Keep up the good walking and DO'NT FORGET TO EAT!!

  3. Hi Pete.
Zoe has given us your card. Great to read your blog. I guess there's no such thing as half-term for you anymore. I guess you are gutted (not)!

  4. Have you put your kilt on yet or are you waiting till you get to the Highlands?
Haggis is a suitable alternative to Pork Pies BTW.
Deep fried & battered Mars bar a delicacy.
Stay clear of the Keg Heavy.
