We climbed up the steep and rocky Byrness Hill with some difficulty

We then enjoyed a fantastic ridge walk along Houx Hill, Windy Crag, Ogre Hill and Coquet Head being very careful where we went.

At Black Halls we left the Pennine Way and went down Dere Street - an old Roman road. Initially it was quite narrow and exposed

but it broadened and levelled as we descended to Tow Ford. We followed Dere Street for the next ten miles along enclosed green lanes or narrow country lanes. Gyp especially enjoyed the section where the track was bordered by over 100 mature/ancient beech trees.

Towards the end I had no map on my iPhone ( I havn't bought the Scotland Outdoors app yet) and was off my paper maps. I had to resort to Google Maps and think I went a couple of miles out of my way.
Got to Jedburgh in the rain.
Went into town at night and had my first "fish supper" (fish and chips to you sassenachs) for years. Then I went across the road to The Cannon. Luckily I managed to avoid Scottish beers and also tried Brannigan's salted peanuts. The barmaid opened them with her teeth and then poured them into a silver dish for me. What else to look forward to? Scotch eggs, Scotch pies. It's also going to be a bundle of fun being the only Englishman in a pub when the World Cup is on....
