After leaving W-S-M I walked along none existing footpaths (although shown on maps and GPS) to a crossing of the M5 nearest to the coast. This is what I found.

You may notice a very narrow set of steps leading down to a tiny walkway that has a water channel flowing next to it. The problem was it had been raining heavily and the dark tunnel was flooded. With the only alternatives being a 6 mile detour or a quick dash between the traffic I decided to take the plunge! So I went down into the dark tunnel with 9 inches of water up my legs, dragging an unwilling dog. Not for the claustrophobic! These are my boots (incidentally my only footwear) which also show the wear on the outside of the left heel. I I should take them back - I've only had them 4 weeks ( and 290 miles)

Walked to Portishead and waited for it to get nearly dark before I pitched on the grasses play area/common.
