Day 26 Mon 10th May

16 miles from Gailey Lock to Hixon
Followed canal to Penkridge and then joined Staffordshire Way just after passing under M6.
The path is very well signposted and easy to follow. Even through Cannock Chase the path was well signed. I was suprised at how wild Cannock Chase is - far more trees and heather than I envisaged and more undulating.

My planned campsite was a CL for caravans only, as I had half expected, so I walked on to my alternative site in Hixon. On the way I had to cross this bridge. What a magnificent structure for foot passengers only (and horses?)

The campsite is behind a pub and basic. No hot water available for second night. Never mind though it only cost a fiver, the beer is very good (Greene King IPA and Ruddles County at £2.60 a pint) and I had Nobby's Nuts again for the first time in a long while. (Please insert your own joke here!). I also watched tv for the first time in over three weeks - England beating NZ at cricket. I had a great night and recommend The Green Man in Hixon to any other impecunious real ale drinker.

  2. Well done both - good to get away from the long wet grass of the Severn Way - I had enough of that too!
