Day 20 Tues 4th May

15 miles from Oldbury to Slimbridge
Lay in my sleeping bag last night listening to all the waders and wildfowl on the estuary.
Got up early to find frost on tent and set off before 6.30 (Golden rule for wild camping -Pitch late, set off early).
View back to Severn Bridge from our pitch.

After walking alongside river to Sharpness I left it and followed The Sharpness and Gloucester Canal for 8 miles to Slimbridge.
I was fascinated to see several dozen old barges, all over 80 feet in length, that had been beached there in the 1960's to prevent erosion of the canal bank by The River Severn.

As I was striding out along the towpath I saw two canal cruises coming up behind me. Passengers inside with air-conditioning on listening to piped music. I must confess I felt quite superior, thinking I bet they never saw those banks of comfrey or that great-crested grebe with a fish in its mouth. Then the cruisers started to pass me. The first one had disabled people in, sitting in wheelchairs facing the windows. (Well done The Willow Trust). The average age of the passengers on the second cruiser must have been about 70. As well as feeling very guilty for having my initial thoughts, I also felt so glad that I had taken this opportunity to tackle this journey of a lifetime. How much longer before they wheel me into a semi-circle to watch Treasure In The Attic?
